Most slabs that fail early did not fail because of the concrete. They failed because of what happened before the truck arrived.
The base decides it
A concrete slab is only as good as the base under it. Rushed excavation, uncompacted fill, and water with nowhere to go are what produce the cracked, settled, heaved driveways you see all over the Dayton area ten years after they were poured. Those failures are decided in the two days before the pour, not on pour day.
So that is where we spend the time. We excavate to grade rather than to whatever depth is convenient, compact an aggregate base in lifts, and set the grade so water runs away from the structure instead of collecting against it. Reinforcement gets sized to the load the slab will actually carry and chaired up off the base, where it can do something, instead of being laid on the ground and buried at the bottom of the pour.
After placement, the work that matters is timing. Joints are cut on schedule so the slab cracks where we put a line rather than across the middle. In cold weather we use blankets and accelerating admixtures, and when the forecast will not cooperate we reschedule rather than pour into a freeze and hand you a compromised slab. Then the surface gets sealed and you get the cure schedule in writing.
We work only in the Dayton area — close enough to reach a job the morning after a weather call, and long enough in it to know the soils, the frost depth, and what each jurisdiction inspects.
